Dublin, Ireland

Beckett Locke

Lean sleeping berths traded against unusually broad shared floors.

A large aparthotel near the docklands whose smallest room types work on capsule principles: a tightly planned sleeping berth, generous shared floors, and services pushed out of the room and into the building. The ground level runs as a public space with a café, work tables and a gym.

The trade is explicit. Private square metres are kept lean so the communal rooms can be broad, warm and genuinely used. Finishes are plain and hard-wearing — plywood, painted steel, dark tile — and the lighting is the thing most guests remember, since it does most of the softening.

Paris, France

citizenM Paris La Défense

One compact room plan, repeated, with the living room left open all night.

Rooms here are standardised to a single compact plan, built around a wall-to-wall bed and a control tablet. Everything else — desks, sofas, long tables, a stocked library — lives downstairs in a living room that stays open around the clock. The tower sits inside the business district, minutes from the transport interchange.

Check-in is handled at a kiosk, which suits the short business stays that fill most nights. The look is bright and graphic against the grey of La Défense: colour-blocked seating, oversized art, no corridor decoration to speak of. It is a small room by design, not by accident.

Okayama, Japan

Hotel MyCUBE Okayama

Classic Japanese capsules, updated, with the bathing floor given the space.

A capsule hotel in the classic Japanese mould, updated with solid partitions, individual locking and cabin-sized storage. Guests move between a locker floor, a bathing floor and the sleeping floor, which keeps noise and traffic separated. Floors are divided by gender.

Okayama makes it a practical base for travel across the region, and rates reflect the format rather than the address. Bathing facilities take up more space than the sleeping berths do, which tells you where the attention went. Quiet hours are enforced, and the building is designed around that expectation.
